Just wondering since his administration seems to regularly pull from a assorted bag of tricks, and since they are so fond of attempting to modify the constitution....

Seriously, in a time of war, can the US President override the 22nd amendment that limits terms and do a Roosevelt and stay in office for the duration of the war? Everyone (almost) would be in a uproar, but considering all the crap that has rained down since he has been President, nothing surprises me anymore.

So, could he do it...if his handlers have the gall to do so...and of couse nothing Bush and Co does at this point could shock me much as it has been six years of unpleasant sensory overload...

Discuss...

No he couldn't. In spite of recent developments in North Korea, which are there to divert attention from the foley issue, republicans will lose the house of representatives this cycle, and even without it, he could not marshall the support of enough legislators to do so.

The military will not support this, so a coup is out of the question.

Supreme Court would probably not support it.

Military coup or martial law is the only possible way, it would be illegal, and the military will not support it.

I really think he has made a big enough muck of things to want out of this situation so he can blame his replacement.

Good luck.

i really dont think so mainly because of all the negativity amongst the public about this idiot of a president that rode his daddys belt buckle to get into office. so no i think the people like you said would hopefully keep anything like that from happening. anyone notice when his daddy was in office we were shelling out millions for war, then clinton came (say what you want about him but) and the economy was better and more consentrated on the problems here and now jr is in office and congress just passed no lie a 70 billion dollar war budget. so no i dont think well have to put up with him any longer than is written.... we all hope

There is still another two years before his term ends, and much could happen in that time.
Yes, if martial law is declared, then the constitution is suspended, and he could remain president for ever.

With the passage of the Patriot Act, and the eavesdropping act and the torture act, is now possible that anyone can be arrested for nothing at all, imprisoned with no recourse to law, and even shipped off to a foreign country for torture. This has already happened to Maher Arar.

As you say, it is all down to his handlers, The Illuminati

i have wondered this also, and found good info when I searched in several search engines. But pretty much- yeah he could do it. Ithink that by the time his term is over he is gonna have us in so much SH** that no body in their right mind would want to step into his job. If he were to (God forbid) be assassinated, then we are in worse trouble because Cheney is "the evil genius in the corner".
If he were to try to stay in office, I hope that the people of this country would get off their duffs and DO SOMETHING.

I'm deeply concerned about what bush's team will do to hold power. at this point, they need to because they will face war crimes tribunals if they don't.

look, they just passed a law saying habeus corpus does not apply to enemy combatants AND that the president can declare any u.s. citizen an enemy combatant. In other words. america is dead and gone unless her people take to the streets in her defense.

The 22nd amendment was enacted because of FDR-he may have been elected a lot but it was all constitutionally kosher. I don't think GWB is contemplating a self-coup; he has his faults but he's not Hitler.

There would be blood in the streets. Besides, he is basically a lazy MonkeyBoy and has lots of money to make after his term is up.

Why would he do something that stupid? A third term? A draft? Martial Law? You libs always think the end of the world is coming. Get a life. Get a job.
