It depends on the individual's medical history, if they have children, and how persistent they are with remembering things. If children aren't wanted in the future then a hysterectomy or vasectomy is the best option. Other than nearly permanent solutions (vasectomies can be reversed in most cases) an implant, the shot, and an IUD are all the most effective and convenient forms of birth control, with the implant and IUD lasting for years with very little upkeep. The IUD can only be used by women who have had children, and isn't recommended for women who have a history of PID and ectopic pregnancy.
There is also The pill, Nuva-ring and the patch, which are all very similar to the in effectiveness, but nuva-ring doesn't have to be taken or reapplied daily. There is also a pill for men that is scheduled to be released in the near future that is thought to be more effective than the pill that is currently out for women.

"most" is abstinance - but nobody likes hearing that.

Always double or triple up - and no, I don't mean use 3 condoms. I mean use a condom, a spermicide, and the birth control pill. Or any combination of three methods using maybe the diaphram or today sponge et cetera . . ..

When it comes to birth control just follow the old addage "there's safety in numbers" - and no, I'm not suggesting orgies . . .
