A) They may consider war and killing wrong. Members of the Society of Friends, Brethern, and a few other churches choose not to serve because the believe war to be wrong. Others may not be of a religious faith, but hold the same belief.

B) Some believe the current war is wrong and choose not to serve in a morally wrong war based upon what they believe to be a lie.

C) A few do not support the US government and choose not to serve in its causes.

D)Those with children or plans for college may prefer not to serve in order to raise their children or finish school.

E)Parents may not want their children to serve in the military in war time because of the potential for being killed. They do all they can to keep their children from joining the military.

Many who were draft age during the Vietnam war era chose not to serve because they viewed the war as wrong. Many viewed all war as wrong. Some elected to become conscientious objectors, a status that exempts them from service, or in some cases, serving in combat...it was not an easy status to get. Others fled to Canada and other countries to escape the draft. As there is not a draft now, its easy to make the choice not to serve for the above reasons or the one you stated in the question.
