The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, the leading U.S. not-for-profit pet industry organization, conducts comprehensive research examining demographics, buying habits and other traits of U.S. guardians of dogs, cats, fish, birds, reptiles, and small animals.

Its 2003-2004 National Pet Owners Survey found that the number of households with pets has increased by more than 10 million since 1992 and that 62% of U.S. households contain at least one pet. That's 64.2 million households (up 20% over 10 years ago) inhabited by 77.7 million cats, 65 million dogs, 16.8 million small animals, 17.3 million birds, 8.8 million reptiles, 7 million saltwater fish, and 185 million freshwater fish!

Goldfish. Everybody has had a goldfish as a pet in their life. I mean they're cheap and all they need is water and a tiny box of flakes which will last them their whole life.

Parents buy goldfishes for kids to make them learn about taking care of 'animals' and learning about death. But yes nothing beats the goldfish

Dogs

In terms of how many are owned, cats win. But, what is best for you depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Cats are easier, because they come housebroken, they keep themselves clean, and if they are on dry food, you can go off for a weekend and not have to board them. Dogs, however, can go with you on walks/hikes, or camping, and also, you can train dogs for different things--hunting, guarding, drug sniffing. But, they don't use a litter box, and have to be boarded if you are going somewhere where they aren't welcome.

People own way more cats than dogs, but you can have like a billion fish in a tank at a time.

Still, I think more households have cats worldwide.

I WOULD SAY THE DOG - THEY ARE LOYAL COMPANIONS BUT THEIR DOWNSIDE IS THAT YOU HAVE TO TAKE THEM OUT TO POO WHERE A CAT JUST GOES IN THEIR BOX. BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD OF TOO MANY ATTACK CATS BUT YOU HEAR ALOT ABOUT GAURD DOGS.
