Moisturizing the skin is essential for all skin types. It helps retain the natural (and needed) moisture in your skin. Skin that is too dry is a lot more prone to wrinkling. Oily skin doesn't wrinkle as much as it ages (so that's a reason to be thankful if you've got it!). Moisturizing your face will make your makeup go on more evenly and look fresher. You can also use it as a makeup remover. It will also protect your skin from premature aging if it has an spf in it.
I think natural products are the best. Pure (cold pressed) Jojoba oil is a great moisturizer for all skin types (if you have extra dry skin, try appyling pure shea butter at night) especially oily. It basically mimics your own skins oils and works with them. I know it's called an oil but it's totally non-greasy (and it actually helps control oiliness and acne). Also try lotions from companies like Aubrey Organics (they make a good one for oily skin with spf in it) or Jason Natural. They also make good body lotions.

Lotion seals in the moisture in your skin, preventing it from drying out, while working as an emollient to soften your skin and keep it more comfortable (especially in the winter when things dry out). If you don't like the feel of traditional heavy lotion, try a spray lotion. I know Neutrogena sells their sesame oil in a spray bottle, although it is kind of expensive. I've heard the Olay lotions are good, too. Vaseline lotions tend to be not quite as oily. I really like the cheaper, bottom shelf lotions, too, like Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E lotion.

Usually the use of body lotion is to help heal or prevent drying of skin. It can also be used to help or prevent signs of aging. There is a very large variety of lotions out there depending on what you want it for. The ingrediants also vary from product to product and brand to brand. Most of it is trial and error - finding what works for you and the reason you are using it. Often you can get samples at the shop for ones you want to try - depending on where you are shopping. You can try talking to a beauty consultant at some of your nicer shops and maybe they can recommend products for you to try. You can do some research online for what each ingrediant does and types of lotions. Hope that helps.
