Sure it takes away the nuisance of constantly spitting out the pips, but are they meant to be more tastier than the fertile type?

The fact of the matter is that many consumers prefer the convenience of seedless varieties of many kinds of fruit. Seedless watermelon and grapes quickly come to mind. In order for the seedless variety to sell, it still must taste good so the hybridizers constantly work to improve that trait of a particular seedless variety.

Many people think that the old seeded varieties taste better. In many instances, I agree. There are many people involved in the "heirloom seed" business. They strive to preserve the seed stock of many old varieties of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. I buy and plant several varieties of heirloom beans that have a lot more flavor then the hybridized varieties commonly available.

If you are interested in the older varieties, do a Yahoo search for "heirloom seeds" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo search box) and explore the results.

Good luck with your gardening.
