the 1 gb or 2 gb is the capacity in terms of the volume of primary data storage the main memory or ram is able to store / handle
the greater the ram amount, the better u'r computer is able to operate
the clock speed of the ram is also important in that the faster the ram, speedier is the computing operation
this has to be supported by the bridge between processor & ram > called the fsb or front side bus

item 1) 1 gb ddr2 @ 533 mhz
item 2) 2 gb ddr2 @ ? ? ?

2048 mb = 2 gb of memory., which is awesome

you will appreciate that your info is incomplete
for item 2) you have not mentioned clock speed of ram

however, ddr2 refers to clock speeds of 400 mhz, 533 mhz & 667 mhz

even assuming worst case that item 2) 2 gb ram has clock speed of 400 mhz., the fact that it is just double of item 1) 1 gb is enough to make it far more effective than 1 gb

2048 MB is 2 GB - this is more than 1 GB that has some lost due to sharing with the video card
