I wish there were a simple straight forward answer to this question, but there is not , iraq will survive it , but to what capacity , and what will be left of its original infrastructure will be entirely up to the forces currently serving and their leaders.

5-10 years is a long time. We were in World War II less time than that.

My hunch is that it depends on many factors, chief among them whether the U.S. still has troops in Iraq. As long as our troops remain there, there'll be insurgents and warfare that will make "normal" life impossible.

It's a virtual certainty that we won't withdraw as long as Bush is president. Once we withdraw, I think there's a 50-50 chance that Iraq will be embroiled in a decade-long civil war. That leaves a 50 percent chance that the Iraqis will be restored to a reasonable semblance of stability.

In any event, Iraq won't become a western-style democracy any time soon. I think the best case scenario would have it turn into something like Egypt, which is nominally democratic, but where the power is very solidly in the grasp of... dare we call it a dictator?

The amount of time it will take Iraq to rebuild its country and economy is inversely proportional to the amount of time before Bush realises he should get the hell out.

Definitely torn apart for ever.
