Transportation, drinking water, irrigation.
Transportation is the main role. Tiny creeks can serve as drinking water source just as well, but they are useless for transportation.
Also, it can serve as a barrier for enemies.

Evidently from the pages of the different history books cvilizations occured near the river. To name some; Egypt (Nile River, Mesopotamia(Iraq) Tigris-Euphrates river, Rome - Tiber river, India - Ganges River, China - Yellow River.
Therefore it is a fact that rivers had something to offer to the existence of the civilizations of the said nations.
1. Water as their main source of life.
2. Water use in making potteries, building of some architectural designs like the pyramids that will proved that they had excellent civilization.
3. Rivers are sort of transportation.
4. Some resources are found in the body of water.

The key that everyone has mentioned, the one primary factor that lead the earliest civilizations to arise in fertile river basins, the Tigris/Euphrates, the Nile, the Indus, is irrigation. Once agriculture entered ancient peoples lives, it allowed them to stop the nomadic hunter/gatherer small tribe mode, and begin to develop all sorts of accoutrement for civilization, architecture, art, writing, etc. But, in order for agriculture to really..."take root"...there had to be a completely reliable water table that is really only provided by large river basins. These basins provide not only the water, but also silt from the headwaters of the rivers which make for fertile soils.

Rivers were used for transportation and shipping purposes. Many dwellings were built near a river because of food from fish that lived in the river and for the use of goods coming up and down the river.
