Our leaders are stupid enough to start ANYTHING during election time. A great aide to an ancient world leader asked "what can we do to unite the people in such a time of turmoil?"

"Start a war", said the leader.

Our leaders are stupid enough to start any war we can, since the one war we have isn't going that well for them. How do we ralley Americans?...start a totally useless war, and watch the sheep fall in line. I wouldn't put it past Bush to start stuff with Iran just to ralley people around him. That whole Iraq war turned out great so let's try it again! Don't underestimate the stupidity of republican war mongers. They are problably telling the president of Iran "my dad could beat up your dad".

Definitely. If the US Government is persuaded that there is a strategic threat from Iran - and they clearly ARE so persuaded - they will move to deal with it, irrespective of world opinion. However, the fun and games begin when one realises that Iran is, in military terms, an entirely different proposition to Iraq. The US, UK and other nations are fully stretched in Iraq, and having difficulty finding forces for commitments elsewhere, whilst maintaining a force in Iraq at a size consistent with its current mission.

Iraq has a total land area of 432,162 square kilometres, and a population of some 26,783,383 (July 2006 estimate). Iran has a total land area of 1,636,000 square kilometres, and a population of some 68,688,433 (July 2006 estimate).

Iran is therefore around four times the size of Iraq, and has a population 2.5 times that of Iraq. Therefore, no matter what damage can be done by US naval and air striking forces, military operations against Iran would ultimately require land forces to take physical control of the country and establish a regime considered acceptable to US and Western interests. As Iran is 4 times the size of Iraq, this means 'boots on the ground' - lots and lots of them. And yet the US and its allies are currently stretched dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan.

No matter what advice the President receives from his naval and air advisers, the US military will be clear that a substantial land force would be required for operations against Iran, and that the size and complexity of Iran would generate the potential for another long-duration military presence in a Middle East country. Those of you who fear a US-led conflict with Iran may be slightly reassured to hear that this is probably the biggest constraint on US action against Iran - it would be expensive, potentially of long duration, and almost certainly domestically unpopular. On the other hand, if the US Government adjudges the strategic threat to be of over-riding importance, those factors may not count for much.

What's that Chinese curse? 'May you live in interesting times'!

Attacking Iran will be very costly.Nonetheless we have to take this threat seriously. You have to look at it from the politicians' point of view too;Bush is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.Opurtunities come once-he should've got Bin-Laden in Tora Bora. That would have been a huge moral victory.
With the Iranian president he has got an advantage with the opposition within Tehran itself. Also he needs to act quickly with the sanctions getting the world community to suppport us.The bottom line is when the lion attacks the porcupine, he usually ends up with nasty barbs and scarred for life.

The answer is yes our leaders would go to war with Iran if they felt it posed a sufficient threat - they don't yet and US and UK troops are already fighting on too many fronts.

This stuff was all in light when Bill Clinton was in office and the intellegence dept FBI, CIA didn't share information. Because of 9/11 we should nuke the Middle East and start a bunch of fun loving human beings. Again its religious beliefs and the hatred of freedom the got us here. Remember freedom is'nt FREE!!

I understand your concern. However, I have to ask, if Iran's Hezbollah terrorists set off a nuke first, will we scream that our leaders were stupid enough to let them?

Remember, Bush was blamed for 'not doing enough' to stop 9/11. What it would have taken was extreme levels of profiling of young Arab men, roundups of anyone with expired Visas, a pre-emptive attack on Afghanistan's terrorist training college, barring all Arabs from flight training, etc.

How should our leaders 'do enough' to halt Iran's apparent progress towards nuclear weapons?

Just ask a question What would you say If we all sat back and let them walk all over us. You would say what are our leaders doing to let it happen I still believe that sadam was clever enough to hide all his weapnons. And do we sit back and let Iran throw nukes at us. These people have a bent gene anyone who is prepared to commit suicide has, and not think of the desruction nukes can have right across the world.

Iran has been funding numerous organizations to kill us since 1979. Where the hell have you been since 9/11? These people don't want you or your mom or your dad or your children or any of your friends to be alive. They want you to die. They want you to be non-existent. They want your name erased forever from the pages of time. Are our leaders stupid? Are you sure your asking the right question? I don't think our current leaders need to be questioned in this matter, maybe why they haven't attacked sooner.
