First, find out what caused the brown patches. It might be insects or animal urine. Also, over fertilizing causes brown patches too.

If the grass is brown, it is probably dead. And while the brown spots can indicate grubs, it could also be a fungus. DO not apply a fertilizer to brown patch as it can make the problem worse.

You are going to have to find out if you have grubs or a fungus. THe easiest way is to check if you have grubs first. Just dig about 1/2 a foot into the soil and search the soil for grubs, if you have them, then you'll need to apply an insecticide to kill the grubs.

If there aren't any grubs, then I would say you have a fungus. To be positive, take a sample to your local extension office and they can tell you for sure. THey can also recommed a control product for you to fix the problem.

Brown areas in the grass while the rest is green ususally means you have grubs. If you don't kill them now they will kill your whole lawn. Fortunately your local lawn and garden carries grub killers.
Refertializing and reseeding your lawn several times a year is also a good way to kill all the weeds in your lawn. The grass chokes them out. Just take a manure spreader and add some grass seed and do a quick go over every couple of weeks, you will have the thickest and best carpet of grass in the neighbour hood.

Brown patches in an otherwise healthy lawn indicate that "lawn grubs" are at work nibbling the roots of your lawn. Go to a gardening shop and ask for some "lawn grub" treatment. Follow the instructions on the packet to apply the treatment properly. Hope this helps.
