Yes, I think she was quite a mess. Probably bi-polar, as others have noted; nymphomania. I remember reading that her husband Laurence Olivier quite had his hands full trying to manage and care for her. Pretty fragile person. A very good biography about her came out in the late 1970s and got excellent reviews--Vivien Leigh: A Biography, by Anne Edwards.
