Depends on what caused the awkwardness.
The above answers address the occaisional out of place feeling people sometimes have when they don't know each other very well & feel that they should speak but don't know what to say.
Someday you may develop some peace within yourself & the awkwardness in the silence will no longer exist for you.

Change the subject completely. All parties will be aware of the awkwardness anyway. Be considerate about what subject you decide to change the focus onto. Speak about something completely unrelated to whatever it was that caused the awkward silence.

Well, I usually try to get a conversation going. I try to notice something about them, and bring it up to talk about.
One person, I asked, "Do you have a dog?" because I noticed lots of hair in their car. And we started talking about our dogs =D
If it's not that, I try to do or say something incredibly wacky to get everyone talking and laughing, to try and lift the mood. You just try to keep everything going! :)
