First, let me say that I am a heterosexual woman and I am married to a heterosexual man. I realize that we live in a predominantly Christian nation but we are also a democracy which allows all race and religions to be accepted so I don't understand why same sex marriage has to be a problem. There are religions in the U.S. that have no problem with same sex couples and allowing them to be married. Why force Christian beliefs on a nation of many beliefs? It really has no effect on us if they are allowed to be married except for our own personal and religious morals and ethics; but they are ours and not theirs.

Think about the fact the devout Mormons don't drink caffeinated drinks...if Mormonism was the predominant religion; would we ban all caffeinated drinks? Yes this is a little different but the same in some way. We would be banning something that one religion didn't agree with, when society as a whole is more diverse than that.

Why disallow it when it only hinders your morals?

Please don't post hateful messages...it only proves you are ignorant.

I understand that people want to shelter their children from this but that serves no purpose...we are teaching them that it's ok to discriminate and hate. I surely wouldn't ask for my son to be gay but if he was, I wouldn't love him any less. And letting him know that it's ok for someone to be homosexual wouldn't make him homosexual but a better person.

Who says it has to be a man and woman in a union of marriage? It's a man made law and a backwards way of thinking. We change with the times and thats what makes us great, this is another time and change to me made.

Oh, so the Mormons changed their laws since I was Mormon. Funny...changing with the times, I guess that justified owning so much stock in the Coca-Cola Corp. So that means there is nothing wrong with changing with the times.

Very long and complicated question. When religion is involved, especially when talking about the western world, things get a little grey around the edges. I totally think that same sex marriages should be legal everywhere, love is love! The fact that most laws state that it's wrong is based on religion and religion in my mind is a matter of opinion. In Canada, same sex marriage is legal. I have also noticed that religion is pushed less when it comes to govermental decision making! I'm very glad I'm Canadian! Good question, thank you!

I totally agree with clcalifornia.

we don't allow someone to marry multiple partners legally regardless of whether they are in love or not, and just because there are alot out there that do it, does it mean we should change the law to accommodate them?
Let them have a ceremony of some kind that recognises them are partners in a union, I have nothing against same sex couples and them wanting to be together as life partners, but marriage is between a man and a women, you can't change the meaning of what it is to appease the minority.

Why can't someone get up and make a stand for something new, something that can be easily accepted by all (most) without changing the meaning of what has been the same for thousands of years.

A legally binding union!!!!

For a lot of folks the problem is biblical. Before God flooded the Earth to cleanse the world of sin there were the villages of Sodom and Gomorrah, were morals had gotten so bad that people did just about anything with anyone they wanted, men, women, camels, yaks, you name it. There are people who are sincerely concerned that the acceptance of homosexual relationships and supporting gay marriage is a large step in asking for another big flood. Personally, I support any kind of love based, mutually respectful union. Sure, the norm is a man and a woman, it always will be... but look at how many single parent situations there are in the world today. Nowadays a kid is lucky if he has two parents... of any sex. It is not like there are huge numbers of us pretending to be straight and just waiting for the chance to come on out and get married.. To many politicians are governed by fear, ignorance, and hate...

marriage across all cultures is defined as a union between a man and a woman.
If you make marriage to same sex ok, then the defination of marriage would have to change.

For instance lets say a man whats to marry is sister....then the defination of brother and sister would have to be changed. If a woman wanted to marry a monkey then the defination of marriage would have to be changed. I know that those are extreem examples, but it is a way to explain that the defination of marriage across the board worldwide would have to be changed.

Maybe same sex unions need a new word,. Well maybe Unions is a good name.

Then what if I move in with my sister and she works.......and I stay home and take care of the household.......can she and I be in a union so I can get health insurance and other benifits. A stretch huh?

Once we compermise and change the defination of marriage there would be a landslide of things that would want to be changed.

I say call it unions and let gay people be in a union. But, please.....lets keep marriage a partnership between a man and a woman.

First if all Mormons are allowed to drink coke and tea, but not overdo it.
Second of all, in the Bible it says: Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Leviticus 18:22
Also: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and recieving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. Romans 2:27

Because it's all about raising children. why, or how can a same sex marriage benefit a child , they need to see how a man and woman interact in a relationship. How could a same sex marriage set an example. Grant it , they don't always set good examples. So maybe that's just a stupid old fashioned idea. something to think about. But that's why society doesn't like same sex marriages. it's all about child rearing.
