Well, I'm 13, and I know it probably won't be soon, but when I talk to my mom about dating, when do you think she'll let me start?

When you're 45.

Seriously, at 13 you have a lot more important things to think about than dating? You trying to become a statistic? Dating is not at all like the media (TV, movies, etc.) make you believe. It's difficult and painful at times - why are you in such a hurry to put yourself through that? In any case, let me recommend that you should not really be thinking about dating until you are in High School, probably around the end not the beginning, if even then.

Do you ever plan to go to college and get a degree and a career? Or are you just going to major in Mrs.?

Listen, this is important: One issue that often leads to a lot of friction between parents and daughters is this very one. Your mom is looking out for you. You are starting the process of becoming self-reliant a little early I think, although some do and succeed. But more often than not people who go to far, too fast end up regretting it later. Others gave you good advice (I just checked their answers then re-opened mine) such as your first dates should not be for a couple more years and the first ones should also be group dates. I have another idea. Talk to your parents and your friends (have them talk to their parents) about the possibility of going on some sort of chaperoned dates maybe - where you can start to have some experience in a supervised environment. That might solve the problem of you wanting to date and your mom saying no.

Hmmm 13 and not been on a date yet?

She'll most likely let you start when she thinks you are mature enough. Don't expect to be able to go on a long weekend to Vale the first time however. When I let my son start dating he was younger than you are now, but it was one of those things where he would invite Alyssa to come with the family, to skating, or the science fair, or whatever. After a couple years of that he could then take her (actually it was other girls by then) to the movies and sit by themselves, or see a different movie then we were seeing. Now he's over 16 and they go out on dates by themselves all the time, but if he waited until 16 to started dating and say, "Can I ask Alyssa to go to the movies," my answer would still have been, "Sure, what movie are WE going to see"

I let my girls group date at 16, single date at 18. Why? Maturity and life experience. Too young can (even if you are careful) put you in positions that you can't handle. Read the posts her and you will know that's true!
