No, HD DVDs and the bluray or BD DVDs require a compatible player. your standard DVD player will not play them. also Bluray will not play in a HD DVD player and a HD DVD disk will not play in the BD (Bluray)player. Remember betamax and vhs?

However the new HD DVD players and BD (bluray) DVD players will play the standard DVDs

If you buy an hd dvd player and get hd dvds and don't have an hd tv, the output will look the same as a regular dvd. However, a regular dvd player cannot play the HD DVDs to the best of my knowledge.

No. You'll need a new player to play them. But you also won't get the full benefit of them unless you also have an HD tv.
