Like Carth's son in Korriban, Bastila's mother, Mission's brother?

Every time you leave the Ebon Hawk, talk to the characters in your party, and advance their storylines. Pretty much, as soon as you leave the ship, talk to your two NPCs, then swap them out for two others, and then talk to them, so on and so forth, until you've talked to everyone. Do that each time you leave the Ebon Hawk.

After having done so, there will be a part in each character's dialogue that will trigger their side quest. IMHO, Mission's is easiest to get to. The very first time you talk to her, she'll end the conversation with, "Like my brother always says..." and the proper response to continue it would be "I didn't know you had a brother". And then she'll rant about him. The second time you talk to her, she'll apologize for getting in your face about him, and explain about Lena. At this point, enter the Ebon Hawk, and leave again (with Mission in the party), and Lena will show up. She'll tell you where Griff is, and Mission at this point will only talk about Griff ("I'd like to find him, but I won't let it interefere with our mission"). The side quest is now opened.
Carth's side quest is initiated upon asking questions about his late wife.
Bastila's side quest is initiated somewhere around her arrogant-but-brief belief that her leading you was a test for becoming a master.
Canderous' is unlocked after reaching the very end of his dialogues (the story about the battle over Malachor V).

Some exceptions : Jolee's will occur on Manaan no matter how far along you are with talking to him (although it too can receive an 'introductory meeting with a friend' if you talk to him enough), and is initiated by talking to a civilian woman [I can't remember her name] there.
HK-47's side-quest is merely repairing him (trust me, a worthwhile choice to do so).
T3-M4 has no side quest.
Zaalbar's has no side-quest to speak of, but his storyline is tied to Kashyyyk itself, and will occur regardless of your choices.

A word of warning, do not advance Juhani's dialogue, unless you don't want the black market items at the cantina on Korriban. The dialogue about Xor breaks opportunity to get it, in most circumstances.

You have to talk to them and use them in your party to increase your connection to them.
