Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

Since the nicotine is embedded in our brain cells ... the thought will always be with us. I will have quit for one year on Oct. 30th of this year and I still get powerful cravings from time to time. It will get easier. You're going through your heck weeks right now. Quitnet.com is a good site to join to help you on your journey to a smoke free life. You can vent there and there are so many who understand exactly what you're going through. Smoking is terribly addictive. And right now I know it may feel like you hadn't smoked in years. The days will eventually get shorter. The first weeks of my quit ... well, when I did smoke I would stand outside on the porch. After I quit I would go outside routinely like I was going to have a cigarette but I would do breathing excercises. I would raise my right hand to my mouth as if I had a cig in my hand and deeply breathe in and out. As the days went on I would continue to go outside only this time I would just take deep breaths. Later I would just stand out there. And eventually I stopped going all together. But that was what I needed to do to help me get past the withdrawals. Finding a replacement for the smoking is difficult but doable. You can do it.

You will get over it. I smoked three packs a day plus a five pack of Tiparillos, a cigar, and mabe a couple of pipeloads per day. I quit cold turkey 30 years ago and that was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.
