both wear clothes that don't follow the norm.

Emo originated as a type of Punk Music in the 80's. People that listened and lived the music where referred to as Emo. This is kinda like how people followed the Grunge music scene. The people had a certian syle of music, attitude and dress style.
These days Emo (the word) has evolved into a lifestyle / look that is simular to Goth, but definately NOT Goth.

Who made you the king of definitions? If I want to think goths and emos are many of the same people, that's my opinion.

because... goths and emos have totally different clothing standards and for lack of better words "tradions/actions" than most people... so people just lump people that are not the average social standard altogether

psh..i know whatcha mean....lol because they both kind of come from the same steriotype..so people kinda get mixed up cause emo's sometimes where heavy black

because it's a basic human need to categorize things that you don't understand - it makes people feel like they "get it" to have a genre (or two) tucked away in one easy place... well, that and all the black eyeliner.

because people don't know how do deal with things that are different from them, so they don't bother distinguishing between alternate or minority groups.
