www.bigapplejazz.com might be a place for you to start. No matter where you are in the Big Apple, there's sure to be a great artist performing there. Dee Dee Bridgewater is the No. 1 vocalist right now. For piano, Herbie Hancock is hard to beat.

The easiest thing for you to do is get the New York Times Sunday edition and look in the Entertainment section to see who's performing. After that, you can log on to amazon.com and listen to clips of that artist to see if that's you what think your friend would like.

Your best bet for jazz isn't usually a concert, but a nightclub or jazz club, which would be more likely to charge a cover than sell tickets. At least you happen to be in a pretty good place for jazz. While the NYC jazz scene is barely a fraction of its former self, it still dwarfs what's going on almost everywhere else in the country. Sadly I am not living in the City right now so I'm not totally up on exactly who's playing where nowadays, but I can give you a few options. There are a number of jazz clubs that you can check out, such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, and the Carlyle Hotel, where the venerable Bobby Short held court for decades until his recent passing. Look in the Village Voice, New Yorker magazine, and the arts section of the Times for some other suggestions. Artists who are booked in those prestigious places are probably going to be pretty good. You can also try Jazz at Lincoln Center, run by Wynton Marsalis, which will be more along the lines of a concert format. Happy hunting.

The Village Vanguard is the coolest and most historic of the major jazz clubs of NYC. Just walking into the place and being there is an event. Take your friend there.

You don't need to buy tickets, you just call and make reservations. You don't need to make a deposit either, you pay at the door. They serve drinks inside, but no kitchen. There's a pizza place next door.
