To avoid piracy issues, do a search for "Legal abandonware". Games like The Elder Scrolls: Arena, One Must Fall 2097, and Beneath a Steel Sky are full version, free, and legal. They have been released into public domain.
I believe Id and/or Apogee also release their old games under the Freeware/Abandonware label, but don't quote me on that.
