My father is in the hospital for 2 weeks now in the ICU because he has pancreaitis. He is on a feeding tube and they put a hole through his trachea because he can barely breathe. (tracheostomy). Well my question is

while he is sedated..can he hear me at all...what is it like...i dont know..i see him blinking with a closed eye when i cry to him, hold his hand and tell him i lov him... I want to know if he can hear me...its such a horrible sight to see my dad, gasping for air provided by a machine...

im telling everyone now....appreciate what you have...because anything can happen...it takes only 30 seconds of a disease to ruin your life...plz pray for me....i need it....

I wish him all the best. Trust medical science, prayer won't help.

I am really sorry you have to go thru this. My father has emphysema and once went thru him being in the hospital and not conscious, and my brother was in a coma for a month before he died...was very hard. They say that they do hear you on a subconscious level. So if you are getting physical responses then that is a good thing. I will pray for your dad, you and your family. God Bless.

My prayers are with you and your family. Say whatever you want to say and tell him whatever you want him to know. Touch him and let him feel your presence and warmth. I believe that hearing is the last sense to go, but it's strange because I think when someone is critically ill, God allows the person to regain their senses just like before. Before my grandmother passed away in July '06, she turned and looked at me and I was quiet as ever. You see...my grandmother was blind. She hadn't seen me in over 15 years and the day I flew in to see her, she looked directly at me :) I believe in my heart that she saw me one last time before she closed her eyes. Just because the person doesn't talk, move, react, or respond doesn't necessarily mean they don't hear, see, feel, smell, or taste. I'm really sorry to hear about your father. Reassure him that he's not alone because you're there beside him and God is always with him no matter what.

I was at my grandfather's side in his final days. He could barely hear and was in very bad shape unable to eat and all. But he seemed so grateful that my wife and I were there to hold his hand and sing to him - it was Christmas. I can't speak to the medical question you pose - which is what level of congition does he have while on sedation. But I imagine he comes in and out of lala landand having you there is wonderful. You're a good son to hang in there with him. Prayers and best wishes to you and your dad.

I don't want to sound cruel, but you have ask this question over and over again, now, instead to be with him at the Hospital you are waisting your time here on line! And believe me, any Hospital will let you stay overnight with a family member in bad condition.
So go there, and hold his hand, he will feel you there!

God will help!

I think he can hear you when you speal to him. Its been shown that people hear things when in that condition. Keep talking to him and helping him feel comfortable. People on this website are screwed up. Pancreas issues are scary! I know from being a student on a floor with many pancreas patients.

I believe he can hear you. I was in a similar situation, but knew my mother was there with me talking to me and could hear her tears hoping I was going to be alright. Heard, but didn't understand completely what the doctors were telling her. So please, continue talking to him. Let him know how you feel. God Bless you in this trying time.

I am sorry to hear that your father is not well. If he is moving his eyes, or any part of his body when you are talking to him, that means that he does hear you. I will send up a prayer for you and your family. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!
