I was a waittress for 9 years. It's not fair to the good servers if the bad ones make as much $ as they do. What incentive does that give them to do a good job? Do you want bad service everytime you dine out? If you choose a serving job then you know that you will have to serve well to make good money. Just like if you work on sales commission you have to sell things well to make your commission. There are a lot of service jobs where you have to fake a friendly attitude everyday. Don't get one if you can't do that. Or don't expect to get paid as much as someone else who does a good job. Also the restaurant ensures that they make at least minimum wage. They chip in to make up whatever they didnt. They are not going home with $2 an hour. So I totally tip according to service. If someone is not bringing in their share of tips, then it says something about their job performance. And the good servers should be rewarded for their efforts.

Because thanks to Ronald Reagan the tax cut president! HA!,The waiter or waitress has to pay a 8% tax on the amount of food they serve you. So if your bill comes to 100 dollars then that server now has to pay the government 8 dollars out of their own pocket. This is on top of the regular income tax we all pay!!!!So if you thank we don't need to tip, because they are already getting paid, you need to also understand that a little known loophole in the minimum wage law in most states says that food service workers who may receive gratuity are exempt from the minimum wage law! This means that the business only has to pay that server half of what ever the current minimum wage is. I can tell you from working in several differnt states that business owners take full advantage of this law!!!!So next time, try to realize that the server is not your slave, and put yourself in their shoes!! How would you like to bust your butt for a coustomer and when it is all said and done Not only did you not make a tip, but sense this person was so cheap ,you had to take money out of your own pocket and kids mouths for the privilege to serve this person. So lets say that you tip this server the old 15%, he is only actually getting 7% of the tip.The rule of thumb is if the sever was a out right jerk Then you can get even by not tipping that is up to you.Now if sevice was a little sub standard you should at least leave the 8% for uncle sam,but 10% is fair. and if you got good service you should leave 20% remember the server is only getting 12% of that 20%So as you can see the assumption that tips are intitlements is wrong Because of the publics ignorance about tipping ,alot of restaurant have started including the grutuity in the ticket price! because of coustomer lack of tipping to pay server taxes! So if you think a tip is a free intitlement you are wrong. So think back how many times have you taking money out of someones pocket because you did not get your salad fast enough!!!!!

There's this term that keeps coming up more and more called "entitlement." I'm sympathetic ot the plight of food servers, and many are too busy because of their cheap and nearsighted employers.

Still, about the silliest thing a food server can do is act offended over a small or non-existent tip. That can turn people against tipping very quickly and for a long time. I'd rather keep my $5 than spend it on a fake smile.

I tip 15-20% for average service, and you can bet that I adjust it for excellent and horrible service, if the server is responsible.

Maybe this is a faux pas attitude, but when I get bad service, I do not leave a tip. If the service was so-so, I leave a so-so tip. If the service was great, then I leave a nice tip. In such a position, the waitresses should be nice and cordial to every customer to get a good tip.

I don't think many waitresses work for fun, so I assume that they want a tip. But sometimes it's hard to put on a fake smile when you're having a lousy day or you hate your job. Who knows, maybe something terrible happened to them that day. When waitresses don't seem to care, I tip them anyway, hoping that my tip might contribute to making their day a little better. I'm sure other people have different opinions on this.

the reason is they don't know how bad they are doing their job. This kind of waitress has obviously chosen the wrong profession.

For me one thing is sure...a tip has to be earned, at least by a friendly face ! If everybody does that they will either make very little money, change their attitude or change their job.

If I get bad service, they can expect a tip all they want. But don't expect me to give them one. And I would be sure to never allow that waitress to take my order again.............I don't like spit in my food!

After about 8 hour at work, all the time on your feet do you jump for joy and smile and act all happy?

It work, their allowed to dislike it. As long as they do their job what does it matter.

Don't not tip ever, second don't reduce a tip cause they are chipper or smiling.

Not tipping is a mortal sin and I hope they spit in your food if you don't tip. Servers only make 2.15 an hour.

Why do so many people out there expect something for nothing.

Its part of the way our American Culture is moving. Entitlements.

So many people expect so much just because they show up for work...they think they are doing you a favor.
