I was raised on and taught Machiavellian principles. So, to quote Niccolò Machiavelli's The Prince, "The answer is of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved." And I must admit, this worked well for me in high school. By being feared (although those fears were unfounded), I wasn't bothered by others very much - which was the way I preferred it.

It depends on which side of the fence your on. America does not try to be loved, thats too costly for Americans`s to stomach. The implementation of fear on the other hand, is an option it uses all too readily. Battering the world into submission with total abandon is not my idea of good foreign policy. America tries it`s damn hardest to ram it`s warped corporate orientated democaratic nightmare down the throats of countries that don`t agree with it`s policies. The normal method for doing this is beating the hell out of them with sanctions and warfare. And why? Because there is no-one to stop you. Totally and utterly despicable.

It's much better to be feared - for example, the only reason we put up with China's BS is because they have a humungous army. Same goes with the aggressions of North Korea. Otherwise, we could have kicked their asses during the Reagan era.

YES
It is easier to have people fear you than love you.
You can be the nicest nation in the world (like us) and help everyone and there will be nations that hate you anyway.
It is better that they fear us and leave us alone.

Fear, and the willingness to impose it is another basic component of tyranny.
