I'm always going on vacation and deciding weather or not to bring along my turtle, I know they can go a long time without food but just how long?

no more than a week at a time, unless they are hibernating
you can always get a bunch of crickets to turn loose in their pen while you are gone

I'm not sure what kind of turtle you have. But, my son has a Russian tortiose and he eats lettuce, veggies etc. We went away for a few days and just heaped his dish full of food and made sure he had a good water supply and he was fine. I know his tortoise 'hibernates' too and doesn't eat much at all sometimes.

you fail to mention type . no matter , they have a hybernation period how ever they do need food water ect. you know . desert types have hard time finding food sometimes and have to go without ,but dont avoid eating .even wake in hybernating to eat and go back.
