Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.

And how else can it be?

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Is not the cup that hold your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven?

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy.

Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.

When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

Happiness cannot be achieved by ignoring others pain. Happiness is intelligence. Intelligence is the child of understanding. To understand why others are having pain and loneliness is to delve into the whole texture of ignorance in life.

Learning about someone elses pain, and then trying to help them, can give you more happiness than just pursuing your own wants. And when I look at the pain of people in foreign countries who have to deal with things that I don't, it makes me happy that I'm an American. I'm not happy it is them instead of me but it helps me to put things into perspective when I think things are going so bad for me.

Wrong! Happiness can only be attained by delving into the pain of others, realising how lucky you are, and helping the others. Happiness can only be achieved by not comparing YOUR weak points to OTHER PEOPLE'S strong point. It is about comparing you, with youself.

happiness can be achieved by ignoring pain in oneself and the pleasure of others--that seems far more logical

People show (and achieve) happiness in many ways.
If that's how you achieved it, well, its all yours...
for me, creating pain for others is how i achieve happiness.

no, you must dive into the pain of others to understand just how much worse it could be, you realize just how lucky you are, and that is something to be happy about!

well unfortunately because most humans are so unstable emotionally...they do have to create distance between themselves and others...whilst this creates a safe distance...love and light can still be send to others...but unfortunately...creating that distance also causes some to then think others are nothing and are there to be endlessly exploited and abused...
