For a male, 20 years old, has never had a job outside of being a car mechanic, and he's wanting to stay out of the automotive business. Strong preferences are daytime hours, no less than $1600/mo.

try sales. that's one area that every company needs good people in and the skills to be good in sales are not really taught in formal education. you will probably have to start with some basic stuff, but if you have a good phone voice, can present yourself well and learn how to use questions to get people emotionally involved in wanting a product or service, then sales is a good place to go, as their usually is no limit to what a good sales person can earn.

ideally, find a company that is helping to provide you with leads, as this can be where you waste a lot of time and can't make as much money as a result.

I understand he wants to stay away from the mechanic aspects of automobiles, but maybe selling car related items would work better, since he will have a good knowledge and be able to explain things with authority

Movie theatres, believe it or not. Most will start you out at a low wage, but they also have no hours caps because they don't pay overtime. They have a high turnover rate, which means that they'll often be looking out for people to promote to supervisor and manager positions.
