I am not asking about a web accelerator, NetZero already comes with one of those. I am talking about upgrading my ISP, Phone Line, Internal Modem. Why is it that My download speeds cap at 5kb/sec? Can it be faster? I don’t use the internet so much for looking at websites, so accelerators wont help me. I mostly play online games. Unfortunately I live in the middle of a rural area and the only high-speed option available for me is Satellite, which cost WAY to much and doesn’t support online gaming. So I guess I am asking how can I get a Modem, ISP, and Phone line that all work happily together to give me the fastest internet I can possibly get in my little backwoods house. Thank you in advance.

Just an extra note after seeing some answers.
1. I CAN NOT get highspeed internet, DSL IS NOT AVALIABLE in my area, I checked, TRUST ME I checked.

2. An extra question, Is a Soft Modem better then other types? I currently have a U.S. Robotics Modem, and it seems like all of the reviews I read of it are horrible.

hi,
this is a rather difficult one to answer. If there is one word to answer your queries it would be QUALITY.

Especially if you are using Dial Up internet, a lot depends on quality :- of the phone line, and more importantly, your computer system.

As for phone line, that is dependent on your telecom company and how they manage the lines.

The best you can do if you really want to have good speed is ensure your pc is top notch, no lags, nothing. Your dialup modem get the advanced one. Sometimes you can look for INIT STRINGS to add "modifications" to your modem. You can do a search on google for the init strings. Type your modem name + init strings.
When I was using Dial up last time, i've seen my connection speed pumped up.... but I dunno if physically it really was increased.

Rgds

Back in the day if your ISP supported it you could use two modems and two phone lines and aggregate them together to get faster internet connection. Not sure if your ISP does that but call them and see.

You're not gonna get much faster than 5 kilobytes per second downloads. The fastest dial-up can possibly go is 56k (that's kilobits, not kilobytes). And really the phone company limits it to 54k I do believe. So divide that by 8 and you get.... about 7 kb / s. Yay. Sorry. Dial-up sucks. I feel your pain.

Ohhh man this really made me cry,,, im sorry to hear your Network troubles, but saddly there is no way to make a Dial-up faster, its not your hardware thats slowing down your pc or any modem... its your ISP

This is a sure-fire way to increase your internet and transfer speed.

Open your tower, carefully remove your dial-up modem.
Throw it out the window.
Purchase an ethernet card (if you dont already have one intalled)
Call 1-888-COMCAST or whatever your local DSL or Cable internet company is and tell them to hook you up!

yeah i always thought it was retarded that my "56K" modem could only download at 2 to 6kb per second and spike every once in awhile and download at 40kb for a few seconds... i think its impossible unless you live nextdoor to your ISP
