There are bascially three types of neurons, namely:
1)Afferent neurons convey information from tissues and organs into the central nervous system.
2)Efferent neurons transmit signals from the central nervous system to the effector cells and are sometimes called motor neurons.
3)Interneurons connect neurons within specific regions of the central nervous system.

In case of climbing stairs, first the CNS ( central nervous system)
takes a decision to climb the step, then the info is passed to the EFFECTOR cells namely muscle cells. SO action occurs.

There are several nerves in your brain and your brain operates every part of your body. The easiest way to answer this question is; What you want your body to do you tell your brain and then your body does what you want it to. Like when you take test you give the answer you have told your brain to give. Everyones brain operates differently though, If a person has damage to the side of the brain that operates just the arms/legs and you tell yourself to move them, They will not move. The reason is those nerves are damaged, not able to function any longer, and no other nerves will operate that part of the body.

your brain sends electrical messages from one nerve to another through the nerve cells, the different parts of the brain controls different parts of your body including your awareness like which direction you are going. Your back of the head including you spinal cord controls your muscle movements and awareness of where you are going, in other words, coordination, your brain sends messages through the spinal cord, and from the spinal cord out to the nerve fibers which then react to move your body
