I work hard and things are going well - pretty much on schedule. But sometimes I have a choking fear that I could mess up and become homeless or something equally tragic. I don't have any other irrational fears (that I know of). Is this part of being grown up? or should I seek counseling?

Welcome to the adult world..lol. It's not an unusual fear. The important thing is to not allow the fear consume you.

In a way, the fear of failure is a good thing, because it makes you work harder to ensure you will never get down to that level.

I think you are going to be very ok!

Lots of luck!

There are many factors influencing success: 1) The definition of 'success' 2) Intelligence 3) Sense (i.e. 'other' intelligence, buisness sense, street savvy etc) 4) Natural skill (which must be honed) 5) Confidence 6) A positive outlook 7) Physical appearance These are all I can think of at the moment, more would surely exist. The most important is a positive outlook. Things may look bad and you may have doubts, but in the back of your mind you must always have an image of yourself as successful at the end of the day. You must have a deep seated, unexplained confidence that you will somehow end up successful. This is generally sub-conscious and little acknowledged. Going by that short piece of information, you have some sort of intelligence as you are at college, but you lack self-confidence and a positive outlook, resulting in fear. Attractiveness is glorified in a culture defunct of morals and ideals, and one that upholds a horribly distorted definition of success. In short, why would you want to be successful by such a definition? Be successful on your own terms. Be true to yourself and others, and you will be successful in the true sense of the word. The only thing that is in vain is vanity.

I think it's a natural fear to have! I'm the same away, I always worried about everything, and have really lofty life goals I'm afraid I will not reach.
The key that I've found is correct finacial planning. I'm worried for example if I die that my husband will not have any money, so I bought a decent sized life insurance policy with instructions on what he should do with it.
I'm also invested with a IRA.
The cool thing about making sound investments is that if you did end up homeless you can borrow from them, until you get back on your feet. Failure in life is pretty unavoidable, but making sound finacial choices so if the worst failures happen can give you a lot of peice of mind. :)
