Most slaves of Rome were foreign-born prisoners of war. The Roman legion led by its generals would travel to new lands and defeat its people, usually taking healthy men and boys as soldiers for more dangerous areas of the empire and using other defeated peoples as slaves.
Although the Romans might not agree, many slaves were educated, just not in Roman ways (obviously, since the society the slaves came from did not value Roman values).
I'm not exactly sure how one is born without parents, but unless there was war being waged in the area, most children had at least their mothers alive.
