The very best way to speed up your PC again without spending a cent is to reformat the hard drive. Then you reinstall the operating system and all programs you are sure you want to run. If your computer is less than about eight years old this is pretty easy. Write this down or print it out. Find your operating system CD, it should be Windows 95, 98, ME, XP etc. Better yet, find the recovery CD that came with your computer. If you don't have one, go to the website of your computer maker and order a recovery disc. When it comes, use it.

First, make sure your computer will boot from the CD when you restart it. Restart the computer and while it is starting, repeatedly press the DEL key (usually, other possiblities are F1, F19 or F10). Usually, this will start the BIOS program. In this program, you can make many changes to your PC. One of them is the boot order or the order in which the processor looks for the operating system in all your drives. Use the arrow keys since your mouse's drivers arent loaded in BIOS. Scroll through the tabs until you see the list that says Boot Order. (Every brand of BIOS is a little different so I can't say what the tab will be called). Change the first boot device from the hard drive to the CD ROM drive if it isn't already set to it. Make the second boot device the hard drive. Then tab over to the Exit tab and choose Exit Saving Changes or a similar named option. Now, once the compute finishes loading windows, put the operating system CD or recovery CD in the CD ROM tray. Restart the computer again. This time, you will see the installation instructions for that program. Follow those instructions and you will reinstall the operating system (in the case of the recovery CD, you will also reinstall the programs that came with your computer). Once you have done all of that, it will restart. Once it restarts, it will be just like it was when you first bought it.

The trick now, is to keep your PC from getting bogged down again. Some tips to avoid that are: don't download just any old program, game, application etc, you see on a website or get sent in the mail or see in the store. Instead, think carefully about wheter you will actually use it or not. If it will run in the background be especially cautious as those programs are the ones most guilty of slowing down your PC since they run while you are trying to do something else like type a letter or play a game or surf Yahoo Answers. Also start running programs like Defragmenter, Disk Cleanup etc on a regular basis to keep your hard drive from getting cluttered. Use the Scheduler in Windows to do this on a weekly basis in case you forget to do it manually.

If you reformat your PC every year or every other year, and do some file maintance inbetween, you will keep it running in tip top condition.

Go to START, then ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS, then DISK CLEANUP.. then wait for a lil bit and CHECK all the boxes.. That's the only thing i can suggest you to do if you don't want to do any hardware upgrade.. Do this twice a week specially if you use the internet a lot..
