I just immigrated from South Africa to Canada, and even though it doesn't bother me, I'm just wondering about this....
It's seems like the Canadian press just tears America apart. And it's as if appluading the U.S for anything is a taboo matter. Don't take me wrong, I think that America has it's mistakes and everything, and sometimes America doesn't suck as much.
Did something happen in history to mkae this hatred exist, or is it something else?
P.S - Please do not insult me if you are American, I think America is as good a country as any. And if you can't give me a good answer based on your experience and opinion, please don't waste your time answeing the question. Thank you.

Some of the uneducated answers that have been made before mine should show you why a lot of Canadians rip on the Americans. For some unknown reason there are Americans that think that everybody wants to be them which is so untrue it's a little funny. Most Canadians don't agree with the Bush administration which is why a lot of us sometimes unfairly judge America as a whole. But a lot of the reason stems from a few ignorant Americans who have to constantly try to convince the whole world that they're somehow superior. It's annoying but you learn to live with their ranting and raving. We all know that if they truly believed they were better then they wouldn't have to try so hard to convince us of it. There are some really awesome Americans out there which is why it's so sad that Canadians get this idea that all Americans are uneducated Jerry Springer guests. Canada and America's relationship has never been perfect though.....maybe they're still upset about the war of 1812.

Harper got elected PM, so how much can Canadians hate Americans? The average media types at the CBC or Toronto Sun are probably a lot more anti-American than the "silent majority". Read the National Post or the Western Standard and you'll get a totally different perspective that is just as made in Canada as the anti-American rants. It's just that the haters are better financed(for now).

The Press is only interested in selling newspapers. If you judged the people by the newpaper, you would think that US people Hate the US. That's what the FREE PRESS is all about.

Consider a newpaper article like this: "America was SWEET today" YIKES, newspapers wouldn't sell with a headline like that.

Most Canadians that I know LIKE us. They visit us often. They even spend their winters in the US.

Last I knew, Canadians loved America, and vice versa. Have a Canadian explain the old joke to you. "C-A-N-A-D-A? U-S-A?" Ehhh? Last I knew there was no hatred. Canada is in the same boat we are; we just want peace in the world, and all this stupidity needs to stop. Too many mother's sons have died. And to quote the late, great, Roy Orbison, "If they all came back but one, it was still some mother's son!"

Think of it like having a next door neighboor in an apartment complex. Canada is quiet, clean, doesn't throw huge parties, and always takes their recycling out on time. Us Americans are the loud, dirty, wake you up at 3 A.M., bass thumping til all hours of the night, tell you your business when you don't need to hear it, get drunk and throw stuff off the balconies, crappy neighbors that everyone hates. The thing is, those neighbors that keep you up late at night are also much, much cooler than you. They are getting the women, they are having fun parties, they are the envy of everyone. Of course Canada hates us. We are obnoxious, we pollute like crazy, and we are much cooler than Canada. America is the frat guy that everyone hates but gets all the women, and has the most fun. I am not proud of it, but it's true.

I have several Canadian friends, and two Canadians who have married Americans and are planning to become dual citizens. I have not experienced ridicule from them. We also vacationed in Canada for a week, but had no bad experiences. Maybe it is just certain areas? I am from Missouri if that makes a difference. (We have ridden the subways of NYC and walked in Central Park at night with no one bothering us as well, so maybe it is just me and my family that does not get the ridicule...) I have great respect for my Canadian friends as well, they are wonderful people.
On a side note, maybe it is the fact that we broke away from Great Britain and were successful at creating a country on our own instead of being ruled by another country, but then again, people should not judge current individuals on what happened centuries ago.
ps - thanks Edward for the kind words. :-)

Lots of countries try to tear America and its ideals and government apart. It just happens that Canada does it in a peaceful way by media instead of hijacking an airliner and crashing it into a place that works for peace.

I think many Canadian people like the people of the US. Foir a long time, their politics became extremely liberal and so their press attacked the US policies and such. Overall, I think we are still friends and good neighbors. It should be that way.

I think I have a simple word for an answer to your pressing question, and it's a he-Bush! You see, it's his trouble-prone and one-sided policies are the cause of many Canadians hating our government, but not the American people.
