You have to go for an interview before entering nursing...the interview panel shouild be good at weedfing out people who aren't going to be suitable.
At the end of the day, ask yourself - do you like looking after people, and do you mind being paid peanuts to do a very demanding/stressful job.

1. become familiar with areas within allied health.
(X-ray, lab, nursing, respiratory etc)
2. decide if you feel the duties and job of a nurse interest you
3. try nurse job shadow
4. volunteer at a local hospital
5. examine educational requirements for the level of nursing you want to pursue
6. If right go for it- realize that although you will deal with real sick folks at some point in your career , their are different levels of intensity you can wind up in (clinics, research, insurance companies, quality control etc.)

If you have the will to take care of sick persons and nurse them to wellness then you are suitable for that profession.

Volunteer to assist in an extended care home or convalescent hospital. See how you get along. When I started out you needed 2 yrs of experience to get into the RN program.

You must have patience, be a listener, have compassion for people and blood, needles, bed pans, and body fluids must not bother you. You will have to be on your feet for long hours and be able to handle death.
