I read it in school but I can't remember the name.

There is an object that will grant any wish. However, if you are in possession of it when you die, you will lose your soul. To get rid of it you must sell it for less than what you bought it for. The main character gets the object more than once, I think. But, in the end, he acquires the object for a penny (or some other very small currency). He begins to get desparate thinking there is no way he can get rid of it. Finally, he finds someone who buys for the least valuable known currency. The buyer takes it with the knowledge that he is condemning himself to hell.

Anybody recognize this?
