Get out and rollerblade as much as possible during the offseason. The added friction helps strengthen the legs. Also, do lots of squats. I read somewhere that Jaromir Jagr does like 4000 squats a day. Another type of squat other than the basic is a jumping squat. You just jump in the air as you come up from the squat and then back down and repeat. This is also a good cardio workout. Back when Dan Jansen won the gold medal for speed skating they had a small piece with him on television doing that jumping squat. We all know how large and strong those speed skaters thighs are.

Learn a little bit about the differences in flex for the hockey stick. That makes a huge difference when it comes to your shot. Most pros use a stiff flex but I heard during a broadcast that Brett Hull uses a more flexible shaft and we all know what kind of shot he has. Also, make sure the stick is the right length for you. To measure with skates on, stand the stick up on its toe and the end should measure somewhere between your chin and nose. I like my sticks a little shorter but go from there and experiment. Go with what's comfortable.

For faster skating.. join a "Power Skate" program.. they will teach you how to get more power to push off with your skates and proper posture for speed. For your slap shot.. start doing the Row exercise.. it strengthens your lats in your back and you will find that you will generate more power when your stick hits the puck. Also, when you get really good at mastering the slap shot technique.. use a higher 'wind up' .. the velocity of the stick will translate into speed for the puck... then all you need to conquer is accuracy.. that takes practise.

when you go and practice put on some weights on your ankles and that will build some muscle on your legs. and when you take a slap shot, don't swing your stick all away around. try to stop it to the spot that you are aiming at and that should help. accuracy is way better then power.
