If the war ended today, the Shiites, led by Al-Sadr's militia would make their strike to seize control of the country. There is even the chance that Iran would follow up in support of Al-Sadr. Their goal will be to create a Sharia Law nation along the same lines as the Taliban.
The Kurds without support may find themselves overcome as well.
Once the Shiites have taken control of Iraq, the nation will presumably build itself up as a satellite state of Iran. And ultimately, Iraq may be used as a staging point for driving against the Israelis.
Quite frankly, whether we stay a day or a year later, these things we come to pass unless we decide to actually fight a war in Iraq. A war means killing. It means that you don't have a truce with Al-Sadr. You go in and kill him and all of his followers.
Vietnam was a failure because we didn't fight a total war. We need to quit screwing around and do what needs to be done...or bring the boys home and stop letting them be clay pigeons for IED's.

The Pentagon has stated many times that you would get 3 countries as an end result of in-fighting and civil-war. These "countries" would be spilt by places that are a majority
Suni
Shiite
Kurd
Iraqs borders now are borders that were drawn up by the British and have been contested ever since.
Of course, since operation Iraqi freedom, it is very hard to say what the outcome of iraqs border may be. If the U..S troops stay, it will be much different than if they leave. The pentagon is worried about Iran taking over Iraq if they are left unprotected and vulnerable. Good question.

My prediction is the war in Iraq will never end, we will just come to a point where we need to think about our troops and bring them home.

We don't stand a chance, for one they out number us, they will arm even their children to kill us. They aren't just going to hand their country over, those people wont give up, they hate us for invading their country, putting away their leader, and killing off innocent women and children. More americans have died over in Iraq then when 9/11 happened. We will never win this war, it will end when we hopefully someday give it up and leave.

Then there is Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan.
The war on terror is designed to never end. Read 1984.
"The reason for the war is not important. What is important is that it never ends".

If we win: peace in the middle east.
If we lose, the middle east remains a cauldron of war and terror that will hit us with ever growing frequency.
