Always discuss your arrival and departure times openly with the ex and the children.
When you pick them up give him a set time to return the kids and stick to it.
Try setting up a schedule,,,,it is only courtesy! Put yourself in his shoes. Keep the communication open. Show responsibility. We all know there are things that might delay you taking them back, but call always keep him informed. It causes less tension and you will have less hassle. You and your ex are the adults and the kids should never dictate when they can come and go.
FYI Your rights should have been clearly defined in your Divorce, If you need structure then seek it!! If not,,, open the communication.

If you try to keep the children from him, even if they don't want to go, he could go to court and get a set visitation schedule. This could be expensive. You and he need to talk and figure out what works. Then stick to it. The kids will benefit from regularity in having a relationship with both their Dad and you.

It all depends what state you're in! If you're in Maryland, try to keep it out of court, or people, including the kids, could be screwed!
