i own a repair shop,,and you didn't put enough info here to answer this,,I'm thinking your talking about a timing chain they have gears, also the distributor has a small gear on it also,,I'm not sure what you want to know, sorry i cant answer this one better.,,PS i will add this,if its a gear drive for the cam shaft, you may want to let someone help you with it,,its not something a first timer should be doing with out help, good luck.

If you are refuring to cam timing ,there three basic systems used .One you just put the gears on (timing marks aligned)then slip the dual idler gears in place. The other two you must mount the idler gears to the block.
Idler gears (in my opinion)are much to expinsive for the return on mild street engines.A good chain set are quit adiquite for most up to highly modified or stout roller cams.
The best advise is to follow the drives instructions.

noooo!
i wanted to as well until i read where geardrives wear your valves a lot worse. i went with double roller comp gears and chain and it runs just as great... unless you really want the whine of that gear drive stuff.....

best of luck

from what i understand its the same as the timing chain but the other two gears should have marks that point at each other if not then it shouldnt matter.
