Not only was it a sign of prestige amongst the aristocracy, but also because of lice, head scabs, lesions, balding, etc. Heads were none too pretty back then.

That's a custom in Britain. I've never heard of it in modern America - "since the 18th century" implies they are still doing it. What American courts are you referring to, specifically? Dates?

they didn't bathe as often as we do now and that way they never had to worry about having a bad hair day
