if u dont know you are from planet oz..
it represents the day of birth. When humans come out of the womb the day they pop out is their birthday! DUH
The following is from World Book -- Childcraft International on "Holidays and Birthdays":
. . . For thousands of years, people all over the world have thought of a birthday as a very special day. Long ago, people believed that on a birthday a person could be helped by good spirits or hurt by evil spirits. So when a person had a birthday, friends and relatives gathered to protect him or her. And that's how birthday parties began.
The idea of putting candles on birthday cakes goes back to ancient Greece. The Greeks worshipped many gods and goddesses. Among them was one called Artemis . . . the goddess of the moon. The Greeks celebrated her birthday once each month by bringing special cakes to her temple. The cakes were round like a full moon. And, because the moon glows with light, the cakes were decorated with lighted candles

It is 2006 right? Well what happened 2006 years ago? That is pretty crazy how people who don't believe in the Bible or God or Jesus, still follow by the day/mth/yr life apparently started. Your birthday is years and months and days after which life began. I'm not saying I'm religious or anything....but don't you think it is a little bit unusual?

A birthday is the date on which a person is born, marking the day a life outside the womb begins. It is customary in many cultures to celebrate the anniversary of one's birthday, for example by having a birthday party with family and/or friends. Gifts are often given to the person celebrating the birthday. It is also customary to treat people specially on their birthday, either generally acceding to their wishes, or subjecting them to a rite of transition.

Birthady is the day we are born. Birthdays are happy times. Although we celebrate our birthdays because we have turned another year older, we are also getting another year closer to death.
