I suppose it depends upon what the situation is and who you are dealing with. In my eyes, yes, assault IS a crime. If you are dealing with a domestic situation here, I would try and talk to the person before acting upon your feelings. I mean, look at it this way.
You have a 13 year old daughter, and she is absolutely gorgeous. It's her first day in high school, and there are a group of girls that doesn't necessarily invite her with open arms. They all see a boy, and they all think he is cute. He thinks your daughter is cute, so they start dating. After school, the leader of the girl group trips your daughter or pushes her or pulls her hair....for nothing!
Perhaps that example wasn't appropriate.I wouldn't know.
I don't know the entirety of the situation, so this is the best answer I can give you. I hope I helped at least a little.

Any form of assualt form a prima facie basis for prosecution. In most countries even something like pointing a finger and threatening can technically be considered assault and can constitute a crime.

Why do you want to go around assaulting people?
Assault can be a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on what condition the victim's in.

Technically, if someone places a finger upon your person then that constitutes an assault. Doesn't really get much 'simpler' than that, does it?

Yes it is! And you CAN be arrested for it, taken to the police station, interviewed under caution and then cautioned or charged.
