The peak of the southern migration usually occurs in mid-January and that of the northern migration in mid-March. Late April and early May afford the opportunity to see mothers and calves close to shore.

Also important is where to go to see them. A high spot on a piece of land that juts out into the ocean would be best. Such a spot is the lighthouse at Point Reyes. It sits on the rocky point at the tip of Point Reyes. It is in the Point Reyes National Seashore, run by the Nationa Park Service. It's north of San Francisco.

I have not seen any whales, but anytime during the day is fine for watching the sea lions. They just lay out all day in the sun on the barges they put out for them.

the best time is in january and february. that's the best time according to the tour guides, but it was still pretty hard to see them.
