An assault is an intentional,unlawful treat to hurt someone,
followed by an act that makes the person threatened fear that he or she is about to be hurt

If you are talking in the eyes of the law, assault can mean as little as some one making a threat. e.g. "I'm going to kill you", if you feel intimidated, it's considered as assault. In assault they do not have to physically touch you. Another example... A is standing 40 feet away from B. A is pointed a realistic looking toy knife at B. A can be arrested for assault, even though A is standing 40 feet away from B and may not be able to carry through the assault.

In English Law an assault can be anything from verbal abuse to a physical attack. Simply touching someone, in certain circumstances, may result in assault charges....take care.
