Epson and HP is great. Never have much problems with their printers.

As for Canon, I have had many problems with it. It broke down many times and I had to send it for maintenance frequently.

The types of printers are:
1)Non-impact Printers: They use ink spray or toner powder.

Inkjet - Sprays ink onto paper to form characters

Page printer/laser - Works like a copy machine, using toner and a heat bar.

Thermal - Uses heat on chemically treated paper to form characters. Example: Fax machine.

2) Impact Printers: They strike the paper to form characters or images.

Type-writer - strikes the paper and ribbon tp form characters.

Dot-matrix - forms characters using row(s) of pins, 9, 18, or 24 which impact the ribbon on top of the paper.

Chain and Band - uses characters on a band or chain that is moved into place before striking the characters onto the paper.

Inkjet: Canon. Here's why. The cartridges are the lowest cost. With 3 separate color cartridges, you don't waste ink, just because one color went dry. The color quality is the best with Canon. One small thing... if a cartridge goes dry while you are printing, you can change that cartridge and resume printing.

Laser: I swear by the higher end HP Laserjet. I have seen models of the LaserJet III and LaserJet IV still working after 10 years. It is the standard of laser printers.

Keep in mind that laser printers BURN and heat up inside. You should limit the number of pages that are printed at once. Even on a larger machine, stop for a few minutes after 25 pages or so. Color laser printers run even hotter. I know a guy that burned out a brand new one after trying to print 200 copies all at once.

In general, if you are planning to just use Black & White printing, then get a Laser printer. While toner modules seem to cost alot, they are much more cost efficient than inkjet.

I've had a canon i950 since mid 2003. I love it, the cartridges don't break the bank in my opinion (6 tanks - cyan, magenta, yellow, black, photo cyan and photo magenta) each runs $11-$12.50, it makes great color prints and black and white. I'm a graphic artist so I need something that will pop when I'm showing my work to clients so I love my canon and I use HP presentation paper it's coated on both sides, it's a bright white paper and with the coating the colors don't sink into the paper so print outs really POP! Photos come out looking sharp to and it's been an easy printer to maintain. I did recently start having problems but did some on line research and found that I could clean my print head, worked like a charm looks good! I have been eyeballing the next model I'd like to get... the i9900, it's pricey but can print up to 13"x19" pages border-less, sounds promising that it will have even snappier color it takes 8 ink tanks and they've made some new tanks for this that create prints that the ink will stand up once printed to more abuse. Check out the web site and the chroma ink link at the bottom of the page.

Inkjet printers are commonly sold for home use. The ink is "sprayed" onto the paper. Laser printers are more expensive and commonly for office use. The ink is baked on and will not run if the paper gets wet.

To choose the best printer you need to know what you are going to use it for. If you plan to print high quality digital photos, a photo printer may be your best bet.

I've had HP, Lexmark, and Brother printers. I prefer the Brother because the ink cartridges are less expensive. When you go to buy, make sure you ask if the print heads are in the print cartridge or the printer. Printheads go bad frequently and if they're in the printer, you will be paying a lot to replace them

The sad truth is that for many printers today, it is cheaper to buy an entirely new printer than to buy the ink for it. A symptom of our disposable society.

Multifunction printers are available for $100-$300. Regular printers are cheap, you can get one for about $40. Laser printers typically run about $200 and up, depending on what they do.

Hope that helps.

Quality brands are Epson, HP and Xerox, but they do sell low-end version as well for the home consumer market.

Cheap brands are Lexmark etc...

I am just going to stick to laser and inkjet printers since they are the ones used widely.

Inkjets use dye based inks to print they have great print quality when it comes to photos and images. They use allot of ink overall but you buy it in smaller quantities, the ink is not colour fast. If you choose an ink jet buy one that has separate ink cartridges for each colour, that way you only purchase what you need.

Laser use a plastic based toner that is heat set to print. Laser ink is more expensive to purchase but you get more prints and cheaper per print then inkjet, print faster, ink is more colour fast.

In the graphic arts/print industry we tend to stick to the top quality brands for a reason. They out do other printers by long term performance and overall quality of prints.

Laser is probably better than inkjet. I have an HP color laser printer on my wish list. Laser-printed work looks more professional, like photocopied, and usually will not "run."

I have an HP inkjet and an Epson inkjet. Not quite as sharp as a laser, and any water spritzes will cause the ink to run, but quality satisfies me and the price is right.

HP, Canon, Lexmark, etc...all have cheap to expensive printers

difference between inkjet and laser? inkjets use ink...laser printers use toner...and generally speaking, laser printers are better, but more expensive too (especially if you want a color printer....most are monochrome or black and white)

bypass with any HP printer. My HP all-in-one is 5 years previous and nevertheless operating high quality. HP printer are more competitively priced to purchase and their ink is more competitively priced than different manufacturers yet is truly good. I paintings in IT and we in elementary words purchase HP printers reason they very last a lengthy time period and the ink is difficulty-free to locate.
