I'm new to Y!Answers, and I've noticed that you can give a thumbs up or down on an answer, but it's really the asker of the question who has the real power, even it the answer they pick got all thumbs downs. Do you like this feature, or could you live w/out it?

Question 1: The point to the point sestem. The truth there is none. Studys have found that we you have a website that use's something like points that people earn they are more lilkely to come back. These points are "power" the more points you have the more power you have. Well that's what some people think. Braging rights. "look at how many points I have" "Oh, yea look at my points."
Question 2: pointless to rate answers. No. This does help. Why you may ask? Well Yahooo made it so you look up answer's on yahoo search. You have some type of od ball question you look it up on yahoo and someone may of asked it here on yahoo answers. The best answer is put up at the top to help the user find the answer to there question fast. If it's not on Yahoo Answers then you can ask it here to help out other people who may have the same question.

I like the thumbs up or down ratings. It gives the asker a chance to get other people take on their question, instead of just the winning one.

I like it even though the ratings don't mean much.
When I look at a question and think of what I would answer - if there is an answer already on it that says what I would have said I rate it as a thumb up. I don't put in my own answer since it would be no better than what they wrote.
My hope is that the person who wrote that answer looks back and sees that someone appreciated their answer. It might not result in their being Best but it is a sign that they are appreciated by someone who recognizes that they are correct.

points are just an incentive to move up the leaderboard. you also need points to ask questions. the more you answer and vote the more points you accumulate. you can do much else with the points but it adds to the fun, as long as you keep in mind that you are here to help people with the knowledge you have.
i wish that yahoo answers would get rid of the thumbs down. i think its a usless too and only leads to troll abuse.

i could live without it, i rate others answers to give the asker some insite on whats right and wrong....when i have asked a question and there are so many good answers, people rating the answers has saved me a headache, cause with so many good answers you can just pick who got the most thumbs up.
