Basically it is an opinion poll. It has nothing to do with strength of schedule or any really tangible aspect of the game. It you win and yo beat the time by forty points you seem to get more votes. Even though that team may be playing a divison 2 team or just a team that is not going to give them a good game. No matter what they do with the rankings and the BCS thier will always be some sort of fiasco come by the end of the season. For example like when a couple of years ago we had 2 different champions. Then another year we had a team go undefeated and didnt get nothing for their efforts. How wrong is that. The one rule in college is that when you lose one game it almost always precludes you from being in a championship game. That is also why they say if you are going to lose a game during the season it should be early on and not late because if you lose late in the season you will not have number of games left to move back up in the polls. Also think about this. Some conferences have champoinship games and other do not. So how is that fair. It is not. You also have to remember the bowl games contribute lots of money to the schools that get to go to their games.

The AP and USA Today poll is just that a poll.
The AP asks the sports writers to rank teams from 1 to 25 and they get points based upon their ranking.
The USA Today/Coaches's poll asks the same question but only the coaches can answer. Same method.
The others are computer rankings based upon set formulas, W/L's, point differential, strength of schedule, etc.

I believe there is a certain board of directors in college football that rank the teams according to 1) strength of schedule, 2) Win/lose margins, 3) the ranking of the opposition... stuff of that nature ....

The Catholics vote for Notre Dame, the rest of the sportswriters and coaches vote for their home team. A lot of writers have admitted to not even watching any of the games of teams they are supposed to rank.
That's part of what makes College Football a joke. And that's sad.

It's all a big racket. The big conferences and teams bribe the voters to keep their teams ranked. Certain teams never seem to drop very far down, even when they lose. Other teams never seem to rise no matter how much they win. The "power" conferences always seem to get preferential treatment.

Certain people like directors are chosen to vote. That's why they have those stats like 33 first place votes.
