Why did you come to America? What were your expectations before you came here? Does America meet your expectations? What is your favorite thing here? If there was one thing you could show your family/friends back home what would it be? What do you miss the most?

How old were you when you came to this country? (this would set up a lot of other possible questions. If they were a child, ask about comparing childhood before and after the move. If adult, ask similar things)
Did they come alone/with family?
How did the move affect the family?
How much contact do they still have with family in previous country?
Did they miss their previous home?
You can come up with lots of questions about different aspects of life before and after the move.
Find out WHY they came to this country?
Was it economics? Were they refuges?
To get onto politics of it:
ask them what they know about the current situation. Then ask them what they think about it. Some will admit they know little, others will go off about the current laws while knowing VERY little about them.
What do they think about those that come to this country illegally? (this is especially true if the person you are interviewing came in legally and followed the rules to become a citizen or whatever)
Use your imagination. Often one quesiton will give you ideas about another and so on.
Suggestion: Take a tape recorder AND take notes. The tape recorder so you can go back adn get more information about what they said in case you don't get it down. The notes in case the tape recorder didn't work (which happened to a friend of mine once).

If you use the who, what , where, when , how , why method of asking questions to begin, follow up questions will follow, if you're actually listening to what your interview subjects are saying.
For example who are you?
When did you come to the US?
How did you come to the US initially?
What was the journey like?
How did you have to prepare for coming to America? Who travelled with you?
Where did you first land?
What were your impressions of america when you first landed? Were you expecting something other than what was here?
why did you decide to come to America.
What was the process in applying to come to America? How long did it take?
what was your first job in America?
How did you get that job? Did anyone help you? Could you already speak english when you got here? If not how did you learn english?
You get the idea.
