I had tons of fruit flys and I couldnt figure out where they were coming from. Well turns out they were coming from my cabinet where I had forgotten some potatos a few months ago. So I killed most of those (although a few pesky ones have escaped) and while I was doing this I opened the back door hoping that they would fly out. In that process I gained about 6-8 regular flys that feel it is there job to make me as miserable as possible. How do I get rid of them besides chasing them around with a fly swatter or hanging that god awful tape from the ceiling.

Fly's don't live very long so you might wanna check your natural gas connections. Fly's love natural gas.

I'm afraid the fly swatter is the best way. Turn off all the lights in the house except the TV and they will come to the TV and then you kill them. The only other way is the fly paper. I'm sorry, those are the two methods you said you didn't want to do. Basil is also a good repellent for flies. One non-toxic method I saw was the construction of a fly trap, they are easy to make:

Here is a wonderful product, you may have to order it by mail though

It's an electric fly zapper... i have one of these and I lov it! because when you swat the fly it gets shocked and the body doesn't get smashed... works really well

I work at an exterminating company, so I know a bit about flies. In order to get rid of Fruit flies, you have to get rid of the source (like you did).

As for those other pesky flies, you could use something like a flyweb light. Or wait untill it is colder.

For a quick kill, you could use a fogger/bomb. These are pretty effective since the pesticide gets into the air, but you MUST leave the house for atleast 2 hours after you set the boms/foggers off.
