sign up for lessons - a good teacher would love to have someone without any bad habits.

Sometimes it depends on the person. I tried learning the chords and using a beginner book but I was getting nowhere so I forgot about it and just messed around with it. After awhile I started getting the tabs to songs and learning them. As I went on I learned more and more and then I went back to that beginner book and noticed that I could already do all the things that were in it. So I suggest you try to find which way is better for you in terms of learning and having fun as well because if you aren't having fun learning then you should change your approach. If you want to be very technical and knowledgeable in music theory and reading music then yea study the books and take lessons. If you want to just play for fun or to play in bands you could to that or just learn on your own or learn songs. Always stay motivated because sometimes it seems like you arent learning but you really are, and make sure to practice practice practice. The best way to learn something is not to believe youll be able to do it quickly right from the start. Take everything slowly until you build up your speed and your accuracy will also be better.

When I first got my guitar (13 years ago) I got a couple of beginner's books & started teaching myself the chords & tablature. I didn't feel I was progressing as fast as I wanted to, so I signed up for lessons.

My instructor was awesome & things started taking off a lot faster after that. Therefore, I would probably recommend some books for reference & some lessons. Feedback from a good instructor can also really help boost your confidence & will make you more likely to keep up with practicing.

Playing along with your favorite songs is also a good way to learn & stay motivated. Most importantly, have fun with it & if it's something you really want to get good at, then keep practicing & don't give up on your goal.

Rock on & good luck to you! I wish you the best!

depending on the style you want to learn basic power cords are easiest and you'll be able to figure out some easy songs, cause most songs use them. It will keep you interested in learning. Once you get a feel for the guitar, start learning open cords (strumming chords) and scales. Also buy guitar magazines cause they have tablature (they will teach you how to read it) and start using them. Also its a good idea to have the song handy on CD or better yet on your PC and listen to it while reading the tab and it will be easier to figure out.

Check for local listings for guitar lessons cause it will ease the frustration because guitar is hard to learn. Don't give up, and good luck!

dude, just do both. get a book on guitar chords. it will help. look up tablature on the internet. u can type in guitar tablature on yahoo and find some great websites. practice songs u know the music to. have fun with it. also just sit and pick around. try to come up with new riffs. dont get frustrated, because when u finally play that one riff from your favorite song, it is the best feeling in the world.

Check out books on scales and chords for electric guitar. Also practice songs you like. It will make it more fun. Find another guitar player to jam with who knows how to play, and they'll give you some tips. Enjoy!!!!

the first thing you should know, is how to tune a guitar, because without tuning, you'll probably learn nothing.
As far as fingering, well that's all important and stuff, but I feel that real important thing is the strumming hand, and rhythm, it'll make you a much better player...

First, learn how to tune it. That is by far the most vital thing to learn first.
